"GROWING PAINS"

A Solo Exhibition Featuring All New Work By Tina Lugo
November 7th, 2015 – November 21st, 2015
Opening Reception Saturday November 7th 2015, 7-11pm
Free Alcoholic Refreshments (21+)

Inculcated by waves of Saturday morning cartoons, characters portrayed in comic book literature, and videogame culture, Tina Lugo became instantly infatuated with the bright colors of the animated world. As she grew up, the social and sexual undertones of these cartoons unbridled themselves from the confines of her childhood memory. Lugo began to realize that the sexual and often tongue-in- cheek humor she expressed had stemmed from what she had watched on early 90’s television and only fueled her passion to uncover the subversive and controversial qualities in the pop culture of yesteryear. The use of enamel and Plexiglass in her work is to suggest that the smooth, hyper-gloss finishing of a world that allures us will always be beneath a transparent barrier we can touch but never enter-a replication of the voyeuristic qualities we all possess.

Lugo lists as her biggest influence, the Ero Guru Nansensu art movement of Japan—a name comprised of fractions of the English words erotic, grotesque, and nonsense. The movement focuses on eroticism, sexual corruption, and decadence, all themes salient in Lugo's work. With the complex compositions of her paintings, often it takes a few moments before the viewer sees the nudity or eroticism in her paintings, something she thinks eases people into the sexual nature of her pieces.

Tina Lugo was born and raised in The Bronx, NY. She studied at the School of Visual Arts where she obtained her BFA and worked with fellow artist, Nicolas Touron. She currently lives in Portland, Oregon where she continues to make glass paintings in her Pacific Northwest studio.

“Growing Pains” is inspired by teenage sexual angst and the loss of innocence in our present day youth and how we sexualize girls before they are truly women. Tina has been a frequent collaborator of fashion mainstays like Mishka and Ball and Chain Society, and she has been featured in numerous high profile art publications, most recently Juxtapoz.

"ID" AN INSTALLATION BY GIANNI ARONE

Sat, Sep 19, 20157:00 PM Mon, Sep 21, 201511:00 PM

"Id" - is an immersive installation by artist Gianni Arone - exploring the unknown, yet omnipresent creative catalyst of the human psyche - termed by Sigmund Freud, the Id.

Filled with a free flowing, unplanned collection of paintings, words, drawings, photographs, soundscapes, and animations - Arone - will, tap into the "id" - to articulate an unspeakable part of his creative process - a part, he believes is cosmically shared in the arts, sciences, and nature itself.

Please be advised, some subject matter may be inappropriate for younger viewers.

The "ID" (or "it"):

"knows no judgements of value: no good and evil, no morality. .... It is filled with energy reaching it from the instincts, but it has no organization, produces no collective will, but only a striving to bring about the satisfaction of the instinctual needs subject to the observance of the pleasure principle - It is regarded as "the great reservoir of libido",[12] the instinctive drive to create—the life instincts that are crucial to pleasurable survival "

STONE MALONE GALLERY

Stone Malone is an American artist, musician, and activist. Best described as a surrealist with a comic-book flare, Malone has developed an underground following for incredibly detailed oil paintings that are recreations of his early work in ink-and-color pencil. His art is also known for bold experiments in color and his trademark use of eyes. The artist created many of the works using a unique 360-technique so that each piece could be rotated multiple times and appreciated from many angles. Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Malone showed artistic promise from an early age. As a young child, he could draw coherent pictures before speaking, and decorated the walls of his home with black Sharpie drawings. He attended Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids and Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California.

Sat, Jun 27, 20157:00 PM Sat, Jul 11, 201511:00 PM

“DAY DESTROYS THE NIGHT”

A SOLO EXHIBITION BY

DARCY YATES

JUNE 27TH 2015 – JULY 12TH 2015

“An LA native, Darcy creates hauntingly personal works of art, straddling the line between beauty and gut wrenching emotion. Her work is gritty, colorful, and embodies the essence of soul. It truly is something to witness and experience in person. We hope you can join us this coming Saturday June 27TH for our opening reception.”

                             - Stone Malone Gallery

Darcy Yates is a So-Cal native who grew up in the Los Angeles Forest. She had an artistic upbringing, raised in the home of an accomplished ventriloquist and brilliant seamstress. Her artistic journey began at a young age, by visual problem solving through color. Unable to shake her visual awareness, she embraced her career as an artist. Yates received her BA from California State University Northridge (CSUN) in 2013 and won “Best in Show” from CSUN's juried art competition her Senior Year. She has been featured in galleries, periodicals and collections throughout the United States

Yates’ work captures the spirit of soul and imagination through colors and shapes. Her work evokes the feelings of a child walking through a dark and silent hallway; frightened but ceaselessly curious of what lies ahead. Vintage photography plays a significant role in Yates’ art. Yates plays with the idea of re-purposing what once was lost. These forgotten photographs are recreated through the visual eye of Yates’ imagination. Her favorite tool is The Spiro graph because of the childish innocence it suggests. Her use of different media balances the stories that coincide with each piece. Her infatuation with unconventional interaction is explored through her paintings of young girls and their pets. Her “Demon Babies” represent our innocence, diminished by the troubling reality of life. Yates creates the feeling of longing within the dead lights of their eyes.

Music helps define and mold the narrative of Yates' work. In her debut solo exhibition, she has linked the gap between sight and sound. Day Destroys the Night is inspired by the lyric from one of Yates’ favorite songs “Break on Through” by The Doors. She sought to bring a new visual interpretation to this notorious anthem. In this collection, Yates conjures the meaning of fresh rebellion through nostalgia; fighting for freedom, dreaming bigger and conquering one's demons. Yates wants her audience to recall, “Day destroys the night, Night divides the day. Tried to run, Tried to hide, Break on through to the other side.”

LOS ANGELES – Stone Malone Gallery is proud to present “The Answer To Everything But Death”, a solo exhibition of new work by Los Angeles based artist, Ryan McIntosh.

While it may have been the artist’s original intent to provide some form of answers within this exhibition, the truth is… he really doesn’t know. Instead, upon viewing the work you’re left with this empty feeling in your gut, more unanswered questions in your head and art that has little to no aesthetic value. ocess however, the artist begins to pose a series of questions about the kinds or returns we expect from contemporary art.

In reality, this exhibition just makes available what everyone really wants – money – and thus it may disappoint on the traditional expectation that art should be “more” than this.

"HEAVY SODA ROCKS" A SOLO EXHIBITION BY HARLEY JONES

Fri, May 8, 20157:00 PM Fri, May 15, 201511:00 PM

"HEAVY SODA ROCKS"

A SOLO EXHIBITION BY HARLEY JONES

An illustrator and street artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Jones was part of the original wave of graffiti in his hometown of Dunedin, New Zealand, some nine or ten years ago. Jones translates his bold, vibrant style between wall and print, pumping fresh illustrations into the world through all available channels. Featuring characters like purple jacket-wearing dudes, flipped cars, and candy-colored hand lettering, Jones’ work is wild enough to weird out the square bears, yet wickedly clean.

Jones uses a healthy mix of traditional techniques to create slopped-up, vibrant, beautifully kinetic illustrations that simply drip with narrative power. Inspired by the lot of wildly talented artist friends he surrounds himself with and by both his father’s (the man was an animator for the legendary Hanna-Barbera productions) and grandfather’s artistic work ethic, Jones combines cartoon-like imagery and sublime narratives that boast Jones’ authentic and off-beat color palettes. Simple lettering and fresh textile patterns in pastel shades and squiggly lines, and the fantastical combinations of the two, make his pieces show like something from a theme park funhouse.

His creativity knows no bounds as his passions for the things he paints and draws stem from his roots in graffiti and his desire to bring a modern touch to the traditional styles associated with graff.

The inspiration for HEAVY SODA ROCKS is Jones’s humorous take on small or less serious crimes, the anticipation of seeing America for the first time, and cartoon nostalgia. Harley will be showing a series of original drawings, paintings, and risograph prints.

Sat, Apr 18, 20157:00 PM Sat, May 2, 201511:00 PM

"GOLD TO THE BONE" A DUAL EXHIBITION BY

THE ARTIST MARIE

TheArtistMarie’s work is highly technical and deeply rooted in cubism and triangulation. She uses a variety of techniques in her paintings and sculptures to cut, fold, and reconstruct recycled material such as cardboard, wood, paint, and tape into geometric shapes. These shapes are then meticulously assembled into intricate lattices and sweeping planes combining a dynamic level of complexity and intricate perspective. TheArtistMarie’s work walks the fine line of chaos, yet brings perfect moments of clarity. In TheArtistMarie’s new painting series, Vertical Horizoncities are depicted from enormous heights in a dizzying, downward, fish-eye perspective. With this new form of cityscapes, TheArtistMarie brilliantly uses the method of subtracting paint from the canvas rather than adding it. Converging lines create an imaginary metropolis that thrusts its viewers into an exhilarating free fall. These captivating works are meant to evoke an adrenaline pumping sense of vertigo.

TARAJOSU

Johnny Tarajosu is a fashion designer and a visual artist that produces original designs on prints, canvases, and apparel. Johnny Tarajosu creates work that blends free-styled intricate detailing of archaic design from ancient cultures, including the Mayans, Sumerians and Egyptians, with Arabic art, Asian calligraphy, and tribal cultures from across the globe to create a vision of human unity, aka humanity. Johnny Tarajosu's work can best be described as a spiritual journey; it draws you in with its detailed precision and placement of conscious design, and invites you to stay and explore your introspective mind and collective consciousness as they freely flow through hidden messages incorporated into the intricacies of each stylized piece. Johnny Tarajosu’s mission is to inspire passion in the intellectual thinker, to cultivate innovation through the use of fine arts and fashion, and to promote the creativity and intuitive understanding that feeds the god in all of us. "Est Deus in Nobis", a phrase heard often from Johnny Tarajosu, reminds us of what our products are created to convey; a sense of royalty, value, and the idea that  we are all gods and goddesses.

Born in Rochester, NY. Edsy has a BFA in Sceneography from SUNY, New Paltz, NY. He has worked as a Stage Technician in television and theater production for the past 25 years.

Edsy’s art techniques are derived from the artists he most admires, especially from the Pop and Contemporary Art genres. The cit He does not adhere to one particular style or medium. He has made several series of works which use found objects, found images, and repurposed materials. He finds source images from his collection of vintage magazines and catalogs, and transforms the original material or content into something modern and edgy.

For the past several years, he has been an active participant in the “un-commissioned public art” of the Los Angeles Street Art movement. Known by his nom de guerre “Pastey Whyte”, his street work stands out in the field and has drawn a following of fellow street artists and fans of the genre. Featured in Stay Up by G. James Daichendt, he’s recently joined several of the movement’s stand outs.
