“DAY DESTROYS THE NIGHT”

A SOLO EXHIBITION BY

DARCY YATES

JUNE 27TH 2015 – JULY 12TH 2015

“An LA native, Darcy creates hauntingly personal works of art, straddling the line between beauty and gut wrenching emotion. Her work is gritty, colorful, and embodies the essence of soul. It truly is something to witness and experience in person. We hope you can join us this coming Saturday June 27TH for our opening reception.”

Darcy Yates is a So-Cal native who grew up in the Los Angeles Forest. She had an artistic upbringing, raised in the home of an accomplished ventriloquist and brilliant seamstress. Her artistic journey began at a young age, by visual problem solving through color. Unable to shake her visual awareness, she embraced her career as an artist. Yates received her BA from California State University Northridge (CSUN) in 2013 and won “Best in Show” from CSUN's juried art competition her Senior Year. She has been featured in galleries, periodicals and collections throughout the United States

Yates’ work captures the spirit of soul and imagination through colors and shapes. Her work evokes the feelings of a child walking through a dark and silent hallway; frightened but ceaselessly curious of what lies ahead. Vintage photography plays a significant role in Yates’ art. Yates plays with the idea of re-purposing what once was lost. These forgotten photographs are recreated through the visual eye of Yates’ imagination. Her favorite tool is The Spiro graph because of the childish innocence it suggests. Her use of different media balances the stories that coincide with each piece. Her infatuation with unconventional interaction is explored through her paintings of young girls and their pets. Her “Demon Babies” represent our innocence, diminished by the troubling reality of life. Yates creates the feeling of longing within the dead lights of their eyes.

Music helps define and mold the narrative of Yates' work. In her debut solo exhibition, she has linked the gap between sight and sound. Day Destroys the Night is inspired by the lyric from one of Yates’ favorite songs “Break on Through” by The Doors. She sought to bring a new visual interpretation to this notorious anthem. In this collection, Yates conjures the meaning of fresh rebellion through nostalgia; fighting for freedom, dreaming bigger and conquering one's demons. Yates wants her audience to recall, “Day destroys the night, Night divides the day. Tried to run, Tried to hide, Break on through to the other side.”
